How Diverse is Your Unit?
In order to be an inclusive PTA take a look at the diversity within your local unit. Diversity includes age; ethnicity; gender; gender identity; language differences; nationality; parental status; physical, mental and developmental abilities; race; religion; sexual orientation; skin color and socio-economic status. To be inclusive is to leverage diversity by bringing together unique individual backgrounds to collectively and more effectively address the concerns within our school communities. In order to leverage diversity, an environment must be created where people feel supported, listened to, and able to do their personal best. As a PTA leader it is beneficial to recognize that diversity and inclusion are critical success factors in achieving a unit that represents your school community.
We must respect, value, and celebrate the unique attributes, characteristics and perspectives that make each person who they are. By bringing diversity and inclusion into your local unit you can increase your overall parent involvement, build morale among parents and staff, and develop more home support for your students.
